    Whom is it for?

    A) This is for people who are interested in taking the new HSK 1 exam.

    B) Although this is meant for the HSK1  exam preparation, it is composed of a lot of basic vocabulary which beginners will learn anyway. Therefore, it is definitely beneficial for people who simply just want to learn fundamental Chinese, and not taking the test.

How to use the vocabulary list?

    A) It’s in the alphabetic order of pinyin. So, if you ever want to look up a word from the list, the alphabetic order will help.

    B) You might see some vocabulary that has the same English meanings, but the characters are slightly different. For example, #166 to #168 all means to remember, but the characters are 记, 记得, 记住which are different. It’s because the variation of vocabulary would be used depending on the contexts and what people want to express exactly in that context. In other words, you will also have to learn the grammar of how and when to use those words. The new HSK 1 vocabulary list is just something to get you to start off or to review. Additional learning on how to use them is still needed at some point.

    C) For the English translations, you might see the word “lit.” It refers to “literally.” Sometimes the literal meanings help understand the word which makes it easier to remember.

    D) Many people find it useful to have it with them to study whenever they have a few minutes. For instance, if you are waiting for the bus, that would be great timing to study a few words.

    E) When you want to quiz yourself how much you remember, you can fold the English part to the back. In that way, it only shows the characters and pinyin, or either one of them. Then, you can give it a try if you are able to say the English meanings out loud.

Quizzes for the new HSK 1 Vocabulary

Want to know how you do after studying the vocabulary? Here are three quizzes for you in the order of difficulty level.

    A) HSK 1 Vocabulary Quiz 1: You will write down English meanings by looking at both characters and pinyin. This is a great first quiz to take because it provides the most supports with characters and pinyin. You might already recognize characters for some words while you might only remember pinyin for other words. This quiz will help you as an initial self-assessment.

    B) HSK 1 Vocabulary Quiz 2: You will write down pinyin by looking at both Chinese characters and English. This is the second quiz to take. It is slightly more challenging than the first one because you are doing the output in Chinese now. Somebody might ask… should I write pinyin with tones or without tones on this quiz? My suggestion would be to write with tones if you can. Chinese is a tone language and tones are important to know when you speak. Even though you might not remember every single tone for each word, that’s totally fine. Learning occurs when you are thinking about tones. The more often you try to remember the tones, the better chances you would remember. In short, please write the tones on the quiz if you can.

    C) HSK 1 Vocabulary Quiz 3: You will look at only Chinese characters and write down pinyin and English. This is the final quiz to take and if you feel good about this one, congratulations! It means you successfully master the vocabulary list.

    Learn 500 Words in Categories

The word list above was all the New HSK1 vocabulary in alphabetic order which is great. However, most people might find it easier to learn or look up the vocabulary in categories, such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. Therefore, I have organized all these 500 words into categories for easy study and lookup.

      1. Hi Kico chinese,
Apart from this new HSK level 1 vocabulary list, does a beginner still need to study through the HSK level 1 standard course book and workbook? Would love to hear from you. Thank you.

        1. Hi, Eriko,

Thank you for reaching out. The short answer would be… it depends on how you would like to prepare for the test. If you feel you already have a lot of resources to learn HSK 1, then it’s fine not to study through the standard course book and workbook. If you feel you don’t have enough resources, studying through the standard course books can definitely give you a systematic way to prepare.

Another suggestion would be to take the sample test first to see how you do. If you know almost everything in the sample test, you can just find some supplement resources to prepare for it without books.

Below is the HSK official website to download the sample test.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if you have further questions.
